Greg Kostraba

Greg has successfully combined a career as a radio professional and concert pianist. He began as a fill-in announcer at WGUC in Cincinnati while completing his doctorate in piano performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Since then, he has worked at WBAA in West Lafayette, IN, KRPS in Pittsburg, KS, and WGTE-FM in Toledo, OH, while presenting solo piano recitals, organizing chamber music concerts, and performing with orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the Midwest.

Highlights of Greg’s radio career include winning the 2007 Ohio Public Broadcasting Award for "Radio Producer of the Year," creating and hosting the weekly 20th-century classical music series, “The Kostraba Conundrum,” and deepening relationships within the arts community by interviewing musicians, conductors, and arts administrators.

Greg was a semifinalist at the Fourth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, where critics called his performances “mesmerizing” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) and “boldly hewn” (Dallas Morning News). He has been featured multiple times nationwide on public radio’s Performance

Today with violinists Francesca Anderegg and Paul Woodiel, cellist Josh Aerie, flutist and Sunday Baroque host Suzanne Bona, and as a soloist with the Toledo Symphony led by Chelsea Tipton II. 

Greg has worked extensively with Ohio-based composer Rick Sowash, recording several of his chamber music compositions. He  has also made recordings with the Trio Quelque Chose, the Toledo Clarinets, and  the Sylvan Trio. His most recent recording with the Sylvans is, “Music for Flute, Cello & Piano by Women Composers,” on the Kickshaw Records label.

Greg’s favorite gig may have been playing piano on a weekly basis in the Rusty’s Jazz Café Big Band in Toledo with his late father, the itinerant trumpet player, bandleader, and radio personality, Dan Terry, in the audience. He also enjoys playing music with his violin- and cello-playing daughters, and taking walks with his wife.
